Stevenson's Breakwater

Stevenson’s Breakwater

This is all that’s left of a failed attempt by Thomas Stevenson (father of Robert Louis Stevenson) to build a breakwater on the south side Wick Bay.  Robert Louis himself spoke of the breakwater as “the chief disaster of my father’s life”. In 1877 the entire end of the breakwater was swept away by the waves, and not long after that the project was abandoned. The total cost was estimated at around £132,000, and this contributed to the eventual demise of the British Fisheries Society in 1893.

This is one of many shots of the breakwater I’ve taken.
